It has been said, “The right train of thought can take you to a better station in life.” To be honest this is a very true statement. For the Christian we are just as responsible for the thoughts that we have, as we are with the actions we take. If you don’t believe me read Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. There Christ compares the sins of anger and lust to murder and adultery. Jesus makes it quite clear that wicked thoughts are just as shameful and damaging to the believers life as sinful physical actions. Two verses that help us have a righteous perspective are Romans 12:2 and Philippians 4:8:
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. – Rom. 12:2 NLT
Brothers and sisters, think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. – Phil. 4:8 NCV
As followers of Christ we are being transformed into the new people God wants us to be. Part of that process is a renewal of the mind. We are to stop thinking the way we did before Christ nor are we to think with the perspective of the world, but we are to starting thinking with a Christ-like mind. Therefore, we need to fill our mind with things that are good, praise worthy, true, honorable, right, pure, beautiful, and respectable. This means that we need to guard what we allow our minds to consume. Remember what you read, watch, and listen to will stay in your mind. Such practices of daily reading the Bible and making careful choices for entertainment will help lead to a wholesome thought life. If you are struggling with a wicked thought life, the first place to start is prayer. Pause right now and ask God to forgive you, cleans you, and help you to surrender your thoughts to be more worthy of Him. It will amaze you how much God will change your outlook!
